Speaking at the launch of the new Quattroporte, a source told us: “A mid-engined car is something we’re missing, so we find this idea very interesting.”
We showed you how the new two-seater could look earlier this year, and as we revealed then, the car – which could be called GranSport – will use a tweaked version of the Alfa Romeo 4C’s platform and rival the Porsche 911.
Power will come from a choice of twin-turbo engines developed and built in conjunction with Ferrari. A 3.0-litre V6 produces 404bhp in the new Quattroporte, while the V8 model has 523bhp.
The car is key to Maserati’s plans to expand to 50,000 sales a year by 2015. These are headed by the new Quattroporte, which is set to be joined by a BMW 5 Series-sized Ghibli saloon and a Porsche Cayenne-rivalling Levante SUV.
